Mel and
Donald
Allen
were
still in
the
process
of
moving
to their
farm in
Frankston,
Texas,
when we
had our
sale in
Tyler.
Donald
sent Mel
to the
sale to
buy
goats
while he
went
ahead
with the
moving.
Mel's
true
love is
birds,
but she
managed
to buy a
combination
of
nannies
and a
billy
that
should
make for
effective
line-breeding.
Since
Donald's
work
with
designing
industrial
plants
takes
him away
from the
farm
often,
Mel is
learning
to take
care of
goats.
Her
extensive
experience
with big
birds
hasn't
done her
much
good
with
goat
care,
but she
worked
for a
time as
a
veterinarian's
assistant,
so she
can give
shots
with
assurance.
Speaking
of those
birds,
you
might
want to
get an
escort
before
you
enter
their
farm
because
as best
I can
tell
from
Mel's
descriptions
those
feathered
friends
of hers
have
extensive
vocabularies
and can
take a
man's
finger
off in a
single
snap. At
least,
they can
bite a
good-sized
stick in
two like
a
loggerhead
turtle.
In spite
of their
vocabularies
I'm not
sure
they
would
listen
to
explanations
if they
didn't
like
you. I
don't
think
she has
trained
any of
them to
be
attack
birds,
but I
intend
to be
safe and
call
ahead.

Two of their nannies, 7A+ Myrna and 7A+ Perky, are bottle goats, so they like to keep company with Mel and Donald. They are enjoying their snug shed in this chilly weather. Donald has put the goats into a fairly small area while he gets goat-proof fence put around the big pasture. |
