Bill
and Donna
Chambers at
Elk Creek,
Missouri,
know
something we
all would
like to
know. They
have somehow
persuaded
their mother
goats to
have mostly
female kids.
In fact
those folks
are pretty
smart about
their goat
dealings in
general. In
'04 they
bought three
packages of
mother
nannies with
three nanny
kids by
their side
and a young
herd sire
whose sister
went on to
be one of
the
top-selling
nannies at
our sale in
Tyler. All
of those
nannies that
he bought
went on to
have mostly
nanny kids
so his herd
of 7A+ goats
is getting
to be a big
one. In '05
Bill came
back and
picked out a
second herd
sire by
flashlight,
and that
goat seems
to be
working out
well.
One of the
smart things
the Chambers
do is raise
dogs to sell
so they can
afford to
stay in the
goat
business. If
you call
them to talk
about goats
give Bill a
little time
to get there
because he
recently
took a bad
fall when he
was
chivalrous
enough to
try to keep
Donna from
falling when
she
stumbled.
She said he
rolled a
time or two,
but the
outcome of
it all was
that he fell
and won't be
able to get
around very
well for
some time.
Donna kind
of wishes he
hadn't tried
to help her
because now
she has to
feed the
goats by
herself!
